Hi! Create 3 Circles and colour the outline them in different colours. As doing this helps to differentiate them. Position the the circles as seen in “Ethereal Flying Fish Screen 1”.

From “Ethereal Flying Fish Screen 1” we make sure that the purple circle is above the blue. We can do this by selecting the purple circle. Then we to the tools control box and press “Raise Selection One Step”. Do this until its above the black.

Next we’ll select the the blue and the purple circles. Navigate to the FILL MENU -> PATH -> DIFFERENCE. That will give us the body of the fish

Lastly we move the black circle until its circumference is touching the vertex of the crescent moon shape we just created. Then using the Bezier Tool, we create a line that cuts the circle as screen in “Etheral Flying Fish Screen 2”. With both the crescent and the black circle selected. Navigate to FILE MENU->PATH->CUT PATH  and remove the top half of the circle.

As seen in screen “Ethereal Flying Fish Screen 6”. The we’ll use the Horizontal Flip button in the Tool Box Control Area. And then activate the rotational handles on the object by clicking on the object once.

Using the Bezier Tool I created the tail. You can trace the above screen, if you need a guide line.

Activate the Snap Tool to the right of the Inkscape window. The we’ll activate the “Snap nodes, paths and handles” and the “snap cusp nodes including rectangle corners”. Then using the Bezier Tool we’ll create a curved line that connects both vertexes of the crescent shape. As seen in “Ethereal Flying Fish Screen 9”. Then we closed the path by connect the two end nodes.

Duplicate the main fish body shape and select both the body and the curved bezier line we just created. {HOLD SHIFT} and use {LEFT MOUSE BUTTON} to select both. Then we’ll navigate to FILE MENU -> PATH -> INTERSECTION.

Now we can get to colouring! Select the fish body and activate the Dropper Tool {D} to the left of the screen. Select the lightest blue #38BCFD in the palettes. For an added layer of colour we will duplicate the fish body and “Inset” it twice. The Inset tool can be found in FILE MENU -> PATH -> INSET Or {CTRL and )}. The with the Dropper Tool {D} select the colour #. Using the Gradient Tool lastly Click on the part of the newly coloured inset fish and pull upwards to a graded full transparency.

Lastly colour the tail of the fish and the curved middle of the fish in the same way the main fish was coloured and the inset fish body was respectively.

For the tail you may want to add another “gradient stop” to the gradient path. So you can add more colour variation. You can do this by {HOLDING CTRL} whilst {LEFT CLICKING}

on the gradient path. OR you can go to the “Fill and Stroke Dialogue Box FILE MENU -> OBJECT -> FILL and STROKE. Go to gradients and add the stop there.

I used First Stop #5483FC then Middle Stop #BA4B95 then final stop #055D87

For the last step we’ll use the Bezier Tool with the Ellipse option selected in the Tools Control Box Area.  Along the spine of the fish we created in Step  we will use the snap tools magnetic effects to follow the same line.

Once the path is made navigate to FILE MENU->PATH->PATH EFFECTS OR {CTRL + SHIFT + 7}. This will open the path effects editor. Look for the “Width option” and change the value to 0.05pixels.

Then using the Gradient Tool fade a light blue down to the colour #055D87

Thanks for reading!
