Rasta Mountain Lion Icon | Illustration | Tutorial

Inspired and rendered from the blog post Tribal Icons, this tutorial concentrates on the Rectangle Tool the Star Tool and the Gradient Tool. The Bezier Tool and Node Control and Boolean modes also play a strong part in this tutorial. A great tutorial for beginners, with a professional result.

Hi and welcome to the Rasta Mountain Lion Icon design written tutorial. We are going to begin with a rectangle using the Rectangle Tool. Then round the corners and give the colour a lighter orange colour than the background.

For the next we are going to duplicate the rectangle {CTRL + D}. Then we will rotate the rectangle whilst holding CTRL till it looks like the screenshot above.

Now that the backdrop star for our lion is created we are going to create the black mane. Using the Star and Polygon Tool we are going to create a  heptagon (polygon with 7 sides). In the Star and  Polygon Tool select polygon and change the number of corners to 7.

Then using the Shape Tool rotate the shape so that the apex is at the top and the base is at the bottom.

For the next step we are going to use the Ellipse/ Circular Tool to create the head and cheeks of the Lion.

Holding the {CTRL + SHIFT} make 4 proportion circles as seen above.

For the this step we will create the whole face and the mouth.

Firstly we will activate the Bezier Tool and join the circles that you created in the last step to complete the face. Join the edges of the circles for the best effect. Once the shape is create select the circles and the Bezier Shape and navigate to FILE MENU-> PATH -> UNION. Once the shape is create to form the Lion’s face we will give it a cream colour using the Dropper Tool.

For the Mouth we’ll create a circle using the Ellipse Tool, then we are going to place it half way over the face and half over the Black Lions Mane. we’ll need to make sure its centered in the middle of the face. Select the face and the circle and navigate to FILE MENU -> PATH -> DIFFERENCE. Then hold {ALT + DOWN DIRECTIONAL BUTTON} until it looks like the screenshot above.

On to the Nose! Activate the Star and Polygon tool, and change the corners to 3(this will work for both the star and the polygon option but I find the polygon easier to manipulate). Rotate the triangle to apex to the bottom and base at the top. Then with the triangle selected we will navigate to FILE MENU -> PATH -> OBJECT TO PATH.

For the eyes we first activate the Ellipse Tool. Make the circle a perfect circle, using {SHIFT +CTRL} while you drag.

Secondly draw a bezier line to cut 2 thirds 2/3 down the circle on the horizontal axis. Once the line is created, select the line and the circle and navigate to FILE MENU -> PATH -> DIVSION. lastly for this step delete the top section created by the cut.

We will then create a line using the Bezier Tool (you can use the rectangle tool for this too) to complete the Lions Eye. Draw a box to the right side of the eye that starts from the corner and goes down, as seen in the screen-shot above.

Then select the eye segment created in the last step and the new box you create and navigate to FILE MENU -> PATH -> UNION. Then colour the first eye black. Lastly duplicate {CTRL + d} it and flip it on the vertical axes to create the other eye.

Bending the Lions Nose! Select the two top nodes and navigate to the tool control box area and select “Change Selected Segment to Curve”. This will show the two handles that control that line segment that connects the two selected nodes. Use them to change the straight line connecting the nodes into a curve that looks like the above screenshot.

Adding the Rasta Stripes! Using the Bezier Tool we’ll create 3 strips of varying width the last begin the smallest and the first begin the largest. Next we make the larget yellow and middle red and the smallest green – as seen in the screenshot above.

Lastly select all 3  with {SHIFT} and group them  {CTRL + G}.

Duplicate the Stripes in the last step and place them on the other side of the main and flip them on the vertical axis.

Onto the Lions Long Shadow! Using your Bezier Tool, the shadow extending from the each tip of the Star Backdrop made it the first and second steps of the tutorial. Extend the shadow to the end of document. Be sure to hold {CTRL} While doing this so that you get evenly spaced lines. Try to get the angle of the increment to be 30 degrees. Complete the shape and colour it a darker orange than the Backdrop using the Fill and Stroke Dialogue Box {CTRL +SHIFT + F} Lightness slider.

Repeat the above process for the Lions Mane, Eyes and Nose. Make sure in each case the colour of the shadow is a darker tone than object it is showing over.

For the next step we’ll add gradients for the drop shadows. Activate your gradient tool, click once on the drop shadow. Then Click and drag the shadow down to the right corner of the background. {HOLD CTRL} while doing this to make the gradient parallel to the lines that make up the Long Shadow.

activate the Gradient Tool. Next for each long shadow created in the last step click on it once then click again and drag the gradient towards the right corner of the backdrop. {HOLD CTRL} while doing this so that the gradient is parallel to the lines used to make the long shadow.

For the last selection we’ll create the Drop Shadows. Dupplicate the Star Backdrop move it slight to the right and bottom. Use the {ALT + DIRECTIONAL BUTTONS}. Then blur it using the Fill and Stroke Dialogue Box. Blur it by about 0.2 – 0.3% .

Do this for the Lions Main also and your complete.
